The Daughters of Virtue and Empowerment Initiative (DOVENET) have continued to spread the message of fistula prevention and treatment in Ebonyi state and its environs with the support they receive from the Friends of Nigeria (FON). This support has gone a long way to impact on the lives of so many who are directly and or indirectly affected by fistula.
For the past 3 years DOVENET has partnered with the Friends of Nigeria to eliminate vesico vaginal fistula (VVF) and also treat and repair identified victims from various communities of the state. In order to enhance community understanding and prevention practices on fistula prevention and treatment, DOVENET conducted advocacy visits and training of Ward Development Committees (WDCs)/Volunteers in two Local Government Areas of Ebonyi state (Ikwo & Ohaukwu LGAs) in the month of January 2020. The purpose of this visit was to advocate for collaboration from the various leaders (traditional, youth, communities, and women) and health committees as they play a very vital role in the dissemination of knowledge in the various communities especially on public health interventions by providing accurate information on the control and prevention of vvf in their communities. The meeting also aimed at encouraging active participation throughout the project period and to establish necessary linkage for smooth project implementation.
The key issues discussed were:
• DOVENET/FON-Fistula Initiative Project overview
• Project intervention areas including fistula family planning
• Community buy-ins, ownership and sustainability
• Rehabilitation and reintegration of fistula clients identified.
DOVENET introduced the fistula initiative project to the community stakeholders, its objectives and targets and solicited for their support. Those present at the meeting were the DOVENET Staff, Traditional Leaders, Community Chiefs, Youth Leaders, Women Leaders, and Health Committees. At the end of the visit, there was commitment from the stakeholder, individuals an families who also pledged their support to the project intervention so as to improve on the family planning and fistula prevention. Influential individuals and group became aware of the current situation on Friends of Nigeria (FON) intervention.
