The unavailability of safe spaces/shelters for survivors of Gender-based violence has been a drawback in the fight against GBV as survivors return immediately to the places where they were abused and the pressure is mounted on them to drop the charges against the perpetrators. This puts a cog in the wheel of justice.
On the 3rd of May 2023, DOVENET joined other Local partners and stakeholders to commission the safe space equipped by the MCGL project with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by Jhpiego and consortium partners under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Mrs. Deborah Okah.
The safe space will enable survivors to get a place of safety while awaiting the justice they deserve and recover fully before being reintegrated into the communities. It is located at the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
The Ebonyi State GBV Safe Space was commissioned by the Executive Governor of the State Engr. (Chief) David Umahi who was represented by the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government Dr. Kenneth Ugbala.
